The UK Government has concluded Israel is not committing genocide in Gaza.
As per the Genocide Convention, the crime of genocide occurs only where there is specific “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group.” The Government has not concluded that Israel is acting with that intent.
In a detailed written response to questions raised in Parliament, the UK Government has confirmed that it does not accept claims that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
The letter, issued by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, addressed questions about Britain’s obligations under the Genocide Convention (1948) and whether Israel’s actions in Gaza should be considered genocide.
Government’s Position
- The UK acknowledges the severe humanitarian suffering in Gaza, with tragic civilian casualties and destruction.
- However, under the Genocide Convention, genocide requires “intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.”
- After reviewing the evidence, the Government stated that it has not concluded that Israel is acting with genocidal intent.
- The UK reiterated that while Israel must do more to alleviate suffering and allow humanitarian access, its military actions are not being legally defined as genocide.
The response also referenced the International Court of Justice (ICJ) case brought by South Africa against Israel. While provisional measures have been ordered—such as ensuring humanitarian access—the ICJ has not ruled that genocide is occurring, nor has it found Israel in breach of the Convention.
Why this matters
As believers, we must continue to stand in prayer for truth, justice, and peace. Scripture reminds us to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:6) and to recognise God’s eternal covenant with Israel. The attempt to delegitimise Israel through false accusations is part of a wider spiritual battle.
Accusations of genocide are among the gravest charges a nation can face. By rejecting these claims, the UK Government has made it clear that Israel’s actions are not motivated by genocidal intent but are part of its ongoing conflict with Hamas and other terrorist groups.
Prayer Points
- Thank God that the UK has not joined in falsely accusing Israel of genocide. Pray that other nations will also resist political pressure and stand for truth.
- Pray for protection over Israel against slander and international hostility.
- Pray for comfort for innocent civilians in Gaza who are suffering.
- Pray for the Church to stand boldly with Israel and reject misleading narratives that seek to demonise God’s chosen people.
At a time when Israel faces increasing accusations on the world stage, it is vital to remember God’s promise in Isaiah 54:17: “No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.”
