At Prayer for Israel, we often hear the phrase, “We don’t want to be too political.” What we mean by this is that our primary goal is not to align with political movements but to seek God’s heart in all circumstances. However, navigating this stance is incredibly challenging in a world where everything has become politically charged. Simply mentioning Israel or Gaza, or using a term that someone finds controversial, can lead to backlash—whether in the form of online shaming, letters of rebuke, or silent cancellation.
I have been guilty of this too, reacting hastily to words rather than discerning the heart behind them. But I pray that the Lord will grant us wisdom – to rise above petty semantics and focus on His truth. After all, much of what dominates the news cycle is fleeting, but the Word of God endures forever.
So, what I write here may seem political to some and resonate perfectly with others. Either way, that is not my concern. My concern is that we, as believers, take these matters to the Lord in prayer. Instead of being swept up in the rapid and reactionary pace of the world, we must take time to reflect, seek God’s wisdom, and trust in His sovereignty. Our relationship with the Lord – secured through the love of the Son and guided by the Holy Spirit – should be the foundation of our perspective.
The Middle East on Centre Stage
Right now, the Middle East is the epicentre of global attention, and at the heart of it all is Israel. But why Israel? Why has this dot sized nation, throughout history, been subject to relentless scrutiny, hostility, and bias? Today, Israel is facing active threats from seven fronts: Iran, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Gaza, and the West Bank (or more accurately, Judea and Samaria, but that discussion is for another time). Why is it acceptable for Israel to be surrounded by such hatred and aggression while the world remains largely indifferent or, worse, complicit?

A Biblical Perspective
From a biblical standpoint, it is not that Israel is always politically or morally perfect. In many ways, Israel reflects the struggles of humanity – its high abortion rates, secularism, and issues of immorality are real concerns. As C.S. Lewis put it,
“The Jews are the chosen people not because they are good, but because God chose them, and through them, all the nations of the earth are blessed. The story of Israel is the story of God’s patience, mercy, and faithfulness.”
C.S Lewis
The enemy knows this. Satan, formerly Lucifer, seeks to destroy Israel because God holds it dear. But is that the only takeaway, that Satan is at work? No. We must remember that what happens on earth mirrors what is unfolding in the spiritual realm (Ephesians 6:12). While the forces of darkness rage against Israel, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is actively at work, protecting and preserving His people. Just as He parted the Red Sea for the Israelites and blocked Pharaoh’s army with fire (Exodus 14:19-31), God is still delivering His people today.
The Lord is Moving
Since Israel’s reestablishment in 1948, we have witnessed its endurance through war, terror, and relentless opposition. The attacks of October 7th brought unspeakable horror and suffering, yet even in tragedy, the Lord Jesus is at work. Many in Israel – especially younger generations – are searching for truth. The realities of war have matured them in ways unimaginable to those of us in the West who are insulated from such horrors. Unlike many of their Western peers, they are asking serious questions about God, faith, and eternity. Through trials, many are turning to Christ.
The Bible Proven True
One of the greatest affirmations of our faith is the continuous fulfilment of God’s Word. If you have never considered the significance of Israel in biblical prophecy, you are missing out. Archaeological discoveries in Israel consistently affirm the Bible’s historical accuracy, proving that Scripture is not just a collection of ancient texts but the living, breathing Word of God. But beyond archaeology, we are witnessing prophecy unfold in real-time. Nations rage against Israel, just as foretold (Zechariah 12:2-3). Yet, God remains faithful. Though Israel is surrounded, God neither slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:4). He is still blocking the enemy and opening doors for His people, just as He has always done.
Overcoming the Political with the Spiritual
It is easy to get lost in the political noise, but as believers, we must rise above it. We are not called to blind partisanship but to faithfulness. Our task is not to win debates but to seek the Lord, intercede for His people, and stand firm on His Word.
Israel’s existence is a testament to God’s sovereignty. And no matter how fierce the opposition, His promises will stand. As we witness history unfold, let us be steadfast in prayer, unwavering in faith, and always mindful that the battle is the Lord’s.
