The surge of antisemitism in the UK and worldwide has reached alarming levels, painting a stark picture of hatred and discrimination against the Jewish community. Recent data from the Community Security Trust reveals a disturbing trend:
- In 2023 alone, there were 3,328 incidents of abusive behaviour, 266 assaults, 305 threats, and 182 acts of damage and desecration in the UK.
- Shockingly, the total number of antisemitic incidents in the UK soared to 4,103, surpassing the previous record of 2,261 in 2021.
- Similarly, countries like the USA, Canada, and Australia, homes to substantial Jewish populations, have witnessed a surge in antisemitic hatred.
While statistics offer a glimpse into the severity of the situation, they fail to capture the full extent of the issue. How often do we witness videos of people advocating for the destruction of the Jewish people or face backlash for merely expressing support for Israel? Despite the biblical prophecy in Zechariah 12:2-3 warning of the world’s turning against Israel, the extent of violence and hatred remains shocking.
Recently, my colleague David Tomlinson faced a distressing incident where he was unjustly labelled a Nazi simply for affirming the biblical truth that the Jewish people are God’s chosen (Deuteronomy 14:2). This unfortunate occurrence served as a poignant reminder that the root of antisemitism extends beyond the surface-level rhetoric often associated with it, such as racism, accusations of occupation, or economic biases directed towards the Jewish community. Instead, it stems from the deep-seated hostility of the world towards God and His chosen people.
Moreover, the rise in antisemitism can be understood within the broader context of increasing sinfulness. In recent years, there has been a surge in sinful activities such as homosexuality, abortion, and widespread deception. These actions contribute to the hardening of hearts against God’s intended purposes and plans. As people’s hearts become callous towards truth, antisemitic sentiments find fertile ground to flourish, fuelled by ignorance and a stubborn refusal to acknowledge reason. This serves as a sobering reminder of the principles outlined in Romans 1, where it is stated that as people persist in unrighteousness, God may give them over to a debased mind.
Yet, amidst the darkness, there is hope. The gospel of Jesus Christ offers salvation and the restoration of minds to truth, dispelling antisemitic values and illuminating hearts with divine love. Romans 12:21 encourages us to overcome evil with good, standing firm in the truth of God’s Word.
As Christians, we must hold fast to the truth that God remains in control, and through prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we can navigate these challenging times with faith and resilience. Let us not be anxious but fervent in prayer, trusting in God’s profound will to prevail.
In light of the rising antisemitism and the broader challenges facing our world, it is crucial that we, as Christians, take concrete steps to show our support and solidarity with the Jewish community. We must stand and be counted with God’s people, demonstrating our commitment through both prayer and action.
- Educate Ourselves and Others: Understanding the historical and current context of antisemitism helps us to speak out knowledgeably and effectively against it.
- Support Jewish Communities: Engage with and support local Jewish communities through dialogue, joint initiatives, and by being present in times of need.
- Raise Awareness: Use social media, community meetings, and other platforms to raise awareness about the rise of antisemitism and the importance of standing against it.
- Advocate for Change: Encourage local and national leaders to take strong stances against antisemitism and to implement policies that protect Jewish communities.
To Prayer…
Amidst the turmoil, let us not succumb to anxiety but instead seek guidance from the Holy Spirit in prayer. Trusting in God’s sovereign will, may we find peace and strength to navigate these tumultuous times with faith and resilience.
Prayer Points:
- Pray for the protection and safety of the Jewish community worldwide, especially in regions experiencing heightened antisemitic activity.
- Ask God to soften the hearts of those filled with hatred and prejudice, that they may come to know His love and truth.
- Pray for wisdom and discernment for leaders and authorities tasked with combating antisemitism and promoting tolerance and understanding.
- Lift up Christian ministries and organisations working to support and defend the Jewish community, that they may be effective instruments of God’s peace and reconciliation.
