A series of fast-spreading wildfires broke out early Wednesday in the hills west of Jerusalem, impacting several communities including Beit Shemesh, Latrun, Neve Shalom, Ta’oz, Beko’a, and Nachshon. Just a week after previous fires in the region, this latest outbreak is being described as one of the most serious fire emergencies in Israel’s history.
The Israel Fire and Rescue Service reported multiple active fires, prompting immediate evacuations from nature parks and rural areas. As strong winds worsened conditions, critical infrastructure was affected — notably Route 1, the primary highway connecting Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, which was closed to traffic. In the panic, many drivers abandoned their vehicles, fleeing on foot to safety.
In response to the growing crisis, Defence Minister Israel Katz ordered military forces to assist with firefighting and evacuations. “This is a national emergency,” he said, “and every available resource must be used to protect lives and contain the disaster.”
Fires were later reported in additional regions, including Lachish in southern Israel and Afula in the Galilee, expanding the scope of the emergency.
Due to the escalating situation, the Israeli government made the difficult decision to cancel all public Independence Day events that would require emergency services. Celebrations in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Ashkelon, Beersheva, Lod, Ariel, Ma’aleh Adumim, Modi’in, and other cities were officially called off.
How can we Pray?
- That, like Elijah, we would pray earnestly for rain to fall on the land.
- For the strong, dry winds to cease and bring relief to firefighters.
- That no further arson attacks would occur, and for the immediate halting of all malicious acts.
- For all false evacuation alerts to stop, so that emergency services can act without confusion.
- For the health, hydration, and protection of firefighters and rescue teams working tirelessly on the front lines.
- That IDF and IAF military bases would be shielded from fire and any acts of sabotage.
- For the safety, peace, and provision of all who have been forced to leave their homes or vehicles behind.
May the Lord bring comfort and strength to the nation during this time of trial.
